MY LIFE IN CHINA

Life in any foreign land never seems to be good from the start as this is a normal human nature with the change of environment but adaptations comes in with time.

When I first arrived in China in 2008, everything (Culture, weather, Language, food... e.t.c) seemed so different to me right from the airport to my University (Jiujiang University).

Communication was a major problem as at that time since China by then was now opening up to the outside world. It was very rare to meet people who could fluently communicate with you in English. Unlike now that even the ordinary waitress can speak little bit of English and most of the recent translation Apps and Chatting softwares such as wechat were also not so common, we used QQ for chating during those times.

I can proudly say that, with the difficulties faced in communication and the zeal to adapt and learn new things in my new environment gave me the push to learn Chinese language proficiently. And that has been a major role in my career and has also opened much doors with opportunities for me here in China.

Food was another difficulty faced because I wasn't getting my Ghanaian “fufu, omotuo, banku” and all that, but that wasn't much a problem to me because I had the believe that, ‘if you can communicate, you will never go hungry’. The first Chinese food I fell in love with was, the fried eggs with tomatoes locally known as “西红柿炒鸡蛋”. There hasn't been a day in my life here that I will enter a restaurant without ordering it. Its just simple but so so delicious.

With the influx of foreigners and international students into China, it has become very common and easier to find and buy local foods of different countries from online and in shops. But I have now become a lover of Chinese cuisines more than my native foods.

The weather as we all know, a young man coming from the western part of Africa,Ghana, I didn't take it easy at all during the first winter because I wasn't prepared for it. But yes, we learn from experience and humans nature adapt with time. Another important factor is also because it isn't so cold in this part of China (Jiangxi) during winter. This has been where I have lived all my life since I came to China, from studying to working (my second home).

When it comes to academics, Jiujiang University as at my time till date have maintained a very great reputable and conducive academic environment for its student. Discipline, hardwork and zero tolerance for absenteeism are the core values that keeps it improving always. Another key value of Jiujiang University is that, it has always maintained foreign lecturers who have very good command of the subjects they teach.

After my graduation in 2014, whiles seeking for my postgraduate admission elsewhere in China, I applied for a one year volunteer teaching job in our college which our dean considering me as an old student, granted me the position. This is something very difficult to even comeby in our own countries and its something that i have always been grateful to JJU management.

After the one year which i was granted, i decided to continue with the teaching in JJU for another three consecutive years, whilst pursuing my postgraduate studies in a nearby city (Nanchang). This opportunity opened up so many ways for me and it broadened my understanding of the medical field. The experienced gained in JJU also served as the foundation for my current job as a lecturer in JXUTCM.

When talking about Jiujiang city, if you are person like me who wants peace, good environment, comfortable life without any pressure in life, then you are welcome to join me here anytime. My current work place is just an hour by train to Jiujiang and there haven't been any holiday that I wouldn't go to visit Jiujiang city. Apart from the comfort and peace of mind, there are numerous tourist sites to visit such as the famous mountain Lushan, Poyang Lake, Jingdezhen ceramics, hotsprings and many more places of interest.

One thing that most people travelling abroad look out for is going to stay in bigger cities or famous cities and then they are later hit by the pressure of everything surrounding them in those cities. A simple secrete from me is that, live in a comfortable and peaceful city and later travel to the big and famous cities for sightseeing, then you will enjoy it more than the people living there.

In all, I really appreciate everything that Jiujiang University and China as a whole has given to me from day one till now and I hope everything will keep on improving further everyday.
